OGDEN — Last night at the Eccles Theater at Weber State University, I attended a lovely production of Our Town. The “lovely” I use here is in the British sense which connotes not just what is pleasing to the eye, but also that which is heard, felt and experienced. As in “what a lovely melody,” or “how lovely it is to see you again.” This word kept coming to my mind throughout the play, and at the end I found myself saying aloud: “What a lovely show!” Continue Reading

OGDEN — Anyone attending a production at the Gallery Theater can look forward to a charming evening. The Gallery Theater is located in the lower level of the Eccles Community Art Center. Now on the National Register of Historic Places, the building was originally built as a private residence, and the theater has since been used as a ballroom, a college dormitory, and a dance studio. The tell-tale ballet rails still line the room, and all the theater implements are no-impact, so as to preserve the historic building. Continue Reading

OGDEN — All I knew going in was that this was a musical that had a lot of Italian. Forget about enjoying the story and learning new melodies. I was scared I wouldn’t understand even the most basic storyline despite convincing myself that 8 years of Spanish would help. It didn’t, but it didn’t need to. The theatre department at Weber State University made me fall in love with The Light in the Piazza. That’s the simple truth of it. Continue Reading

OGDEN — I’ve always been a little cautious of dinner theatre and didn’t know quite what to expect. Granted, I knew I wasn’t going to be snacking on a lamb shank while A Midsummer Night’s Dream played on a stage in front. What’s more is this promised to be a murder-mystery-musical dinner theatre performance. Simply put, I was more than pleasantly surprised by my night with Hunt Mysteries and I’m pretty sure you will be too. Continue Reading

I’ve been hard at work this past few days contacting productions across Utah in order to send our reviewers. The response has been overwhelmingly positive and I think that’s because there’s a need in Utah for a resource of consistent theatrical press coverage. Granted, the large companies will get reviewed by the papers. That’s a given. But what about the newest community show that hasn’t yet established their audience? What about those theater companies that haven’t yet built up the capital for serious advertising or haven’t yet gone the non-profit route? Continue Reading
